Taman Safari Indonesia, Kissed by a Dolphin bit by an Orangatan

Today we went to the Taman Safari in Indonesia. The ride was a couple hours due to a traffic jam. When we got there we paid to get in. They give you a better price if you live in Indonesia so I put my had and sun glasses on hoping they wouldn’t notice me. We also had to keep the kids quiet.

The Safari begins with driving through all the areas with the animals and at the end there is also a park with other shows and rides. There were some people feeding the animals from their cars but we didn’t bring any food for them. It took a while to go through the trail.

We saw some Zebras.

The driver opened his window for a bit and almost got licked by a Camel.

That’s a real elephant behind us. We also saw someone people riding an elephant in the safari area when we were driving through. They also have food that you can feed the elephants.

I got my picture taken with a Orangutan. It was 10000 rp for 1 ticket so just over a buck for most pictures and rides. Towards the middle of our adventure we realized we could have gotten 10 tickets for 40000 rp. That’s not my smile. The Orangutan is biting my finger. It wasn’t hard. Almost like a baby biting it.

We also saw a dolphin show. Standard dolphin or whale show. High jumps, hitting balls out of the water, Kissing the trainer, making noises. The little guy wasn’t too happy about this. It was suppose to be a kiss from the Dolphin. That’s the closest he got.

They also had pony rides.

and elephant rides.

and a train. There was a tunnel with dinosaurs or something scary. I’m not sure exactly cause I wasn’t on the train. The kids still liked it though.

Sea World Indonesia and another mall

Most of the days we have been here have been great weather. Today it was raining and of course we were going to do something outside. We rented a boat today for the whole family to go on and throw flower petals in the water for those that passed away. This is something they do here in Indonesia.

After our boat ride we had lunch outside in the rain under umbrellas in the rain.

Sea world was close by so we went there for a couple hours.

Sea World Indonesia

Outside of sea world there was a statue with animals standing on top of one another.

Gelanggang Samudra

The next day we went to another mall. They had kids rides inside the mall. There was a butter fly ride, cars, a train, feris wheel and a lot more.

Butterfly Ride in Indonesia Mall

It was a really confusing mall with many floors. It’s a good thing we were with someone that knew where they were going. We just went on the rides and then went to eat.

10 Things I’ve Seen Carried on Motorcycles in Indonesia

As I’ve said before there are many motorcycles in Indonesia. My estimate is about 10 for every 1 car. They work their way through the traffic and abide by very few traffic rules. When there is a traffic jam they get through it by going in between the cars. At one particular intersection they don’t ever stop for the red light. They aren’t just used for a mode of transportation for single people. They also get used for delivers or as the family’s means of transportation. I have seen motorcycles with many things on them since I’ve been here. Here are some of the one’s I remembered to write down.

Motorcycle

Carrying Items

  1. A printer.
  2. 5 gallon water jug.
  3. A cooler.
  4. A ladder.
  5. Pots.
  6. A cake for delivery.
  7. Wicker baskets.
  8. Food stand with gas hookup.
  9. Large bag of rice.
  10. Catering food delivery with over 50 Tupperware containers.

I also saw someone carrying blinds today.

People on Motorcycles

  1. Man riding 1 handed, with a smoke in the other hand, and his daughter sitting in front, both without helmets.
  2. A family of 4.
  3. Motorcycle Rickshaw.
  4. Mom with baby strapped to her front and another kid standing at the front of the motorcycle. All with no helmets.

3 Kids Themes for Malls in Indonesia

In the last couple days we have been to several malls. It seems like that’s the only thing to do around here. There are quite a few malls. They all seem to be busy even during the week.

Every mall has a different theme for the kids. We saw the tallest Lego Santa in Asia.

Jakarta Indonesia, Asia Mall Lego Santa

This is taken from the third level.

There were a lot of kids around playing with Lego’s.  Apparently it was a holiday on the day we were there.

Biggest Lego Santa in Asia

They also had a Lego snowman and Christmas tree.

Another day we went to another mall and their theme was Disney. They had a Princess Disney castle. There wasn’t anything going on but they had a lot of Disney things. My son was looking around trying to find the princess.

He did however find his new favourite character Doraemon.

Doraemon

One night my wife and I went to a midnight sale. It was from 8pm till midnight. On the way there we got stopped by a train. She told me to make sure I look at the train as it goes by. There were people on top of the train. I guess this is normal for here. They will either hang out on top or from the sides just for a free ride or if they can’t get tickets to get on it. I guess the same goes for buses too.

The mall had a Dora the explorer theme. There was a DJ playing House and dance music as well as the department store. There was also a set-up for a band. We were only there for a couple hours so I’m not sure if they changed over to a band or if that was for another day.

The malls here in Indonesia always seem to have something interesting going on.

Jakarta Indonesia Hospitals and Doctors

For the past week we have all been sick. After a couple days of fever for the little one we decided to see the Doctor. We have been to the hospital several times to see the doctor for the kids. The hospital looks new and updated like the malls. In the kids area they even have some cool murals on the walls. This one has the characters from the Disney movie cars.

Jakarta Indonesia Hospital. Disney Movie Cars

They also had TV’s with playhouse Disney on for the kids to watch in the waiting room. Most of the time the wait wasn’t long.

In the lobby they also had some artwork with paints that kids could do for a couple bucks. They also had a Starbucks, restaurant and bread shop. In the main entrance there was also a grand piano and someone was playing in one day. It didn’t really look much like a hospital. I’m thinking it was more like a clinic with doctors offices.

The little guy had to get some warm mist to help with his cough along with all the medicines they prescribed. I can’t imagine how much all of this would be in Canada but here the prices weren’t too bad.

Jakarta Indonesia Physiotherapy

The second day they had a Christmas tree up in the hospital.

Everyone’s starting to feel better now just before these last couple days.

Monkey’s Ride Bikes in Jakarta Indonesia

Well we have all been sick for about a week now. You are starting to catch up. Everyone’s starting to get better. Most of the time we have just been laying around the house and sleeping. We did however do some things.

Three haircuts were under $20 cdn

Hair Cut in a Car

We went out to a seafood restaurant for my wife’s uncles birthday.

Seafood Market Restaurant

It was kind of a restaurant / seafood market.

There was fish and lobster. They had chicken for me since I can’t have seafood.

I could have had the fish but I don’t really care for the food staring at me while I’m eating it.

Some of us got our picture taken with the food.

And with Santa

Another day some guys were on the street with a monkey. The monkey rode a bike and did some tricks while the guys played music. It was a couple minutes long.

They also had masks for the monkey.

I took a video as well. Maybe I’ll post is sometime later. This was more entertaining then the other monkeys we drove 1 hr to see.

Jakarta Indonesia Flea Market… Bargain, Bargain, Bargain,

Today I woke up at 4am and couldn’t sleep. I guess that’s what happens when you go to sleep at 8pm. At least the computer was free so I could check some e-mail and add some of these posts I’ve had ready. Hopefully you know by now these aren’t live in realtime. You’re several days behind.

We left at 10:30am to go to another mall. This one is more like a flea market where you can bargain. We passed by Indonesia’s first solar powered billboard.

It took about an hour and a half to get there because Jakarta has a permanent traffic jam. First we went to the food court. There must have been about 30 food outlets there. They all look like they are selling the same thing to me. Most probably are the same. Each one has someone pushing their food and their menu. It just starts to get annoying after a while.

We had lunch at the restaurant Hola Hoka Bento Restaurant at the end of the food court.

Hola Hoka Bento Restaurant

This was all 78500rp. They provided chopsticks so I figured I’d get more practice. I’m getting better.

Hola Hoka Bento rice, teriyaki chicken, shrimp. Bento rice, beef.

Bento rice, teriyaki chicken, shrimp. Bento rice, beef.

The mall had a lot of cheaper items and if you walk away from most they will give it to you cheaper. We picked up this mini guitar that plays just like a real one. I think they were trying to get about $15 cdn for it and we got it for about half that.

Kids Guitar

Unfortunately for me iphones aren’t popular in indonesia so no good deals for them. Blackberry is more popular here.

The mall was pretty crowed for a Tuesday. I can’t imagine would it would be like on the weekend. You probably wouldn’t be able to move. There seem to be a lot of people around here at the malls that want to touch my baby’s face. I don’t know if it’s some kind of good luck thing here or what. It’s starting to get kind of annoying.

For Dinner

Fried Tofu, Tempe – Fried fermented soybean, Chicken sauté

After dinner we listened to some unique guitar music.

Choo Choo Train in Jakarta Mall & Yummy Crepes

I woke up at six this morning. We had breakfast and waited till 11:30am when the driver was available to take us to the mall.

Indonesian Bread with Sprinkles

Today we went the original Jakarta Mall. You have to pay to use the washroom at this mall. It was 1000rp. It was well worth it for the lack of toilet paper and a broken hand dryer. Apparently they give you toilet paper on the way in if you want it. I don’t get how you are suppose to predetermine how much you will need. Good thing I wasn’t there for #2.

We had lunch at Gakmi Permata. Or at least that’s what it says on some of the plates. So I’ll go with that name. We had

Rice, Swamp Cabbage with beef, Sapo tofu & Chicken

Sorry, half of the chicken is missing from the picture. My wife was hungry and I wasn’t quick enough with the camera.

and for dessert

Cssava and brown sticky rice with sweet coconut sauce. Ice dessert with brown sugar and fruit jellys.

We did some shopping then went to the mall we went to on Saturday. The Puri Inda II Mall. We had been promising the kids for 2 days they could go on the train at the mall during the week, when it’s not busy.

Here is the pink Christmas Tree I was talking about before.

We also had some Crepes. Chocolate chips with peanut butter and chocolate chip ice cream.

For dinner we had

Noodles, fried noodles, tofu and meatball soup, vegetables.

Indonesian Massage and an Ice Rink in Indonesia?

Woke up early today. The bread man is making noise again today even on a Sunday morning. Looks like I’m the only one up.

We tried to setup the wireless internet but apparently it’s not going to be working. Their cable modem LAN out doesn’t seem to be working only the USB out. My wireless doesn’t have a USB in though.

The Coconut guy came by and I got another young coconut drink. This one was better then the restaurant because the coconut was younger and you can actually scrape the coconut from inside.

Young Coconut

At around 10 am we went to see some relatives and friends for short visits as well as a pass by of my wife’s house that she grew up in.

Kids in Mirror

After our visits we went to the mall. We were taking a short cut down an narrow bumpy road and at the end it was blocked by a steel barrel. Most of this area had ditches to absorb some of the water from the large downpoars. Most of these houses get flooded when it rains. Some of them were raised above ground level.

This mall (Mal Taman Anggrek) was 4 storeys tall and just as nice as the one we went to yesterday.

Jakarta Indonesia Mal Taman Anggrek Mall

It was busy since it’s Sunday. This is the first mall I’ve been in that has an ice rink.

Mal Taman Anggrek Jakarta Indonesia Skating Rink

This is where my wife said she first skated. It was pretty busy with skating and lessons.

We went for lunch. The food court has a desk where you buy tickets that you pay for the food with so none of the food court vendors have cash. When you are finished you can cash them back in. This dish was only $3.50 cdn.

Nasi Campur – Rice Mix

Nasi Campur – Rice Mix

And this one $2.00 cdn.

Pempek – Fish Cake

We also got this drink called the Es Shanghai. It was like a slushy with strawberry and chocolate. On the bottom was fruit flavoured jellies.

Es Shanghai

We went shopping in the department store. It was around 2pm and I think it was a shift change because there must have been 200 employees that passed by us. The department store wasn’t bad. I actually liked it. They played dance music J. My type of store. My wife liked it too cause she found the shoes she wanted from before when they didn’t have her size.

That was enough shopping so we went back to the house so the kids could have a nap.

In the evening we had dinner and then I got a massage. Not from my son. Someone came to the house to give me a massage. It was 1.5 hrs.

Indonesian Massage

I could probably get one here every month for the price of one at home. It was pretty good and not someone jabbing their elbow in me just to get enough pressure.
